Benjamin McDonald

Benjamin McDonald - Guitar Teacher

Instruments:

Guitar, Bass Guitar & Ukulele – Rock, Pop, Funk and Blues

Qualifications:

Adv. Dip Of Contemporary Music at WAAPA

Experience:

Ben has been playing in live bands since 2007 and has appeared at most major Australian festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, Southbound, Big Day Out, Beyond The Valley, and Laneway, as well as local events such as In The Pines and State of The Artfest.

2019 saw Ben playing bass for Meg Mac on a sold-out tour of Australia and New Zealand.

He currently plays bass for Katy Steele (Little Birdy) but has in the past played for many artists including Pond, Grace Woodroofe, Boat Show, and Peter Bibby. 

Apart from being a session musician and teacher, Ben is also a songwriter, and his own project is called Human Buoy. He writes and records most of the instruments himself and has had success with multiple songs receiving airtime on Triple J as well as other stations around Australia and a video clip on Rage ABC. 

Ben is a relaxed, patient, and passionate teacher who takes pride in passing on what he has learned to others, no matter what age or ability level.

Bradley Burgess

Bradley Burgess - Guitar Teacher

Instruments:

Guitar, Bass – All Styles

Experience:

After spending three years at WAAPA from 1996 to 2000 on the saxophone, Bradley began instrumental tutoring at Maranatha, Carey, Somerville and Swan Baptist Colleges. He has taught modern-style guitar and bass as well as big band classes. Bradley has played bass in the local band scene for seven years pre-pandemic and has in that time developed a passion for limited-release and one-off-production-run instruments.

Russell Smith

Russell Smith - Guitar Teacher

Instruments:

Guitar, Bass – All Styles, Metal, Blues, Classical, Funk

Qualifications:

Russell has been a professional musician and music educator for over 15 years.

 

Experience:

Russell has had his own compositions played in film and TV in the U.S. as well as being nominated for an Aria for his composition ‘Away’. He feels it’s his responsibility to now pass on his wealth of knowledge to newcomers.

Signed his first major label recording and publishing deal with Warner Music Australia in 1999 and has continued his relationship with a renewed agreement with Riptide Music, a Los Angeles-based movie publishing house.

Tad Michalak

Tad Michalak - Guitar Teacher

Instruments:

Guitar, Bass – Contemporary, All Styles

Qualifications:

Teaching member of West Australian Music Teachers Association

 

Experience:

Tad has been playing for 26 years and taught for 15 years. He doesn’t just teach how to play the instrument; he also creates love for the music. He is always encouraging students to perform in public. Additionally, Tad is preparing students for AMEB classical guitar exams.

Yann Vissac

Yann Vissac - Guitar Teacher

Instruments:

Guitar, Bass – All Styles

Qualifications:

Cert IV in Music Composition at WAAPA

Experience:

Yann has played drums for 17 years, electric bass for 16 years and guitar for 14 years. He attained a Certificate IV in Music Composition at WAAPA, where he took up piano.

He is passionate about original music and was a founding member of local hip-hop collective Koi Child, who toured internationally and were nominated for an ARIA award in 2016. He currently performs and writes music for his own band, Vissac.

Having tutored in music privately for five years, Yann has taught hundreds of students of all ages and a wide range of skill levels, as well as running some workshops through schools.
